To be eligible for the AVID program, students have to have a GPA of 2.0-3.5 and must be in the 8^th grade.  This class will teach kids valuable note taking skills, better ways to learn, organization strategies and information about colleges.  The mission of Avid is to insure that all students, and most especially the least served students in the middle, are capable of completing a college preparatory path.

Tutorials take place every Tuesday and Thursday.  Tutorials are designed to help kids with problems they may be having in their classes; Tutorials are not a study hall where they do homework.  They will come to class equipped with their tutorial pass, on time (which the teacher supplies), stating their subject and their problem.  The teacher then forms groups according to subjects and the students collaborate as a team to work out each problem.  It could be an actual math problem or a concept in history or science that needs to be discussed more deeply.  Tutorials were created to help students in their subjects as well as to encourage deeper thinking.

Mondays and Wednesdays AVID students do a variety of writing activities (Strategies for Success), goal settings, self-reflecting and organizing.  They also have guest speakers come in and give personal accounts of their lives and how they came to be in the careers they are in.  They take trips to highs schools about once a month to have tutorial sessions with the high school AVID students and they spend a lot of time researching colleges and universities as well.  The goal here is to encourage student to start thinking about what they want to do in the future.

Friday is about fun!  Avid calls them “FUN FRIDAYS.”  The teacher has an assortment of motivational and energizing activities that promote team building and laughter.  Fridays are a way to reward the students’ hard work and dedication throughout the week.
